Art Musics of Asia (3 cr.)

An introduction to the traditional musics of China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, and continental Southeast Asia: instruments scales, rhythms, textures, melody and song styles, performance practices, aesthetic principles, and cultural context. Genres studied will include ensemble musics (the Javanese gamelan and Japanese gagaku ordchestras), sacred chant, dance music, and music for the theater. Video and live performances, lecture, discussion, and extensive listening. Grading will be based upon a take-home midterm examination and a final examination that will include listening and identification. Open to non-music majors; ability to read Western staff notation will be helpful, but it not required. Prerequisite: junior standing or permission of the instructor.
