Graduate Minor in Music Theory

The minor in music theory must include T550 Readings in Music Theory (3 cr.) or T591 Teaching of Music Theory (3 cr.), T551 Analytical Techniques for Tonal Music (3 cr.) or T556 Analysis of Music Since 1900 (3 cr.), plus 6 credit hours from available graduate courses in music theory by consultation with the department chairperson or the coordinator of graduate studies in music theory. A minimum grade of B is required in each course to be counted towards the music theory minor.

Students must pass both a written and an oral qualifying exam to satisfy the minor field requirements in music theory.

In addition to completing the Minor Field form in the graduate office, students should request a minor field representative in music theory. Links to these forms can be found here.

Before Fall 2004

The minor in music theory must include T550 Readings in Music Theory (3 cr.) or T591 Teaching of Music Theory I (3 cr.), T551 Introduction to Analytical Techniques (3 cr.) or T556 Analysis of Twentieth-Century Music (3 cr.), plus 6 credit hours from available graduate courses in music theory by consultation with the departmental chairperson or the coordinator of graduate studies in music theory. A minimum grade of B is required in each course to be counted towards the music theory minor.
