Ph.D., Yale University,  2009), wrote a dissertation that investigates the knowledge structures underlying tonality in music from 1730–1830 as a form of culturally situated cognition. He has previously published in Theory and Practice, the Society for Music Analysis Newsletter, and has an article on schemata and historical modes of listening forthcoming this fall in Musica Humana, in a tribute issue dedicated to the memory of Leonard B. Meyer. Prof. Byros has presented/will present several papers at national, international, and regional conferences in North America and Europe, among them SMT 2006 (Los Angeles) and SMT 2009 (Montréal), CarMAC 2008 (Cardiff University), “Tonality in Perspective” (King’s College London, 2008), and “Music Analysis: Crisis or (R)evolution” (Strasbourg, France, 2009). As a graduate student, he was awarded the Patricia Carpenter Emerging Scholar Award from the Music Theory Society of New York State (2006), and the prize for best paper, from the Society for Music Analysis (UK), presented at the University of Cambridge (TAGS conference, 2008). His research interests include tonality, schema theory (and music cognition in general), the history of music theory, the analogies/homologies between music and language, and music and philosophy. Prof. Byros has previously taught at Yale University (2005–07, 2008–09), and has served on a special issue editorial board for the Journal of Schenkerian Studies (vol. 2, 2007).
