The Teaching High School Music Theory workshop will provide hands-on experience for teachers who are teaching or developing courses in music theory.  Special emphasis will be given to the Advanced Placement (AP) Music Theory course and exam. Workshop topics will include:

  • Designing an effective music theory curriculum (skills, topics, texts, etc.)
  • Overview of the AP Music Theory exam
  • Strategies for teaching aural skills
  • Strategies for teaching analysis and music writing
  • Reinforcing music theory instruction in the ensemble
  • Use of technology in music theory instruction

The workshop is appropriate for current AP music teachers, teachers who would like to convert an existing music theory course to an AP course, and teachers interested in starting a music theory course. Those who have taught music theory previously will be invited to bring sample materials to share and discuss.
