Vocal Performance and Teaching Workshop

Singing and Teaching for a New Era
June 7-12, 2010

Kiesgen_teaching Join a conversation with the people that are changing the way we teach singing. You will hear about the newest and best ideas for creating beautiful singing and reliable vocal technique in far less time than traditional methods have done. Performing experience and understanding of vocal function are helpful to all teachers, but we cannot be truly effective unless we understand how our students learn to do new physical tasks. The new ideas we explore will be centered on strategies that change physical behavior more quickly and effectively and thus produce more successful singing.

The workshop will feature sessions with guest clinicians, Donald Miller, creator of Voce Vista, Meribeth Bunch Dayme, distinguished teacher and author whose legendary book, Dynamics of the Singing Voice is now in its fifth printing, Elizabeth Blades-Zeller, author of Singing with Your Whole Self, Lynn Helding, whose new column, Mindful Voice will appear regularly in Journal of Singing, and Stephen Robertson, head of vocal pedagogy at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Our expert guests will be joined by IU Professors Costanza Cuccaro, Paul Kiesgen, and Jeff Nelsen.

Donald Miller’s research into the resonance of all voice types can assist us to better understand what kinds of adjustments we can make to lips, tongue, jaw, etc. to create the most efficient and functionally correct sounds possible - sounds that everyone will agree are more beautiful. biofeedbackHis 2008 book, Resonance in Singing, will be available to workshop participants at a reduced rate and includes a personal copy of the Voce Vista program. Dr. Miller will show us how to interpret the signals of Voce Vista in lessons and practice. After some introductory sessions on Voce Vista, we will present “wired master classes” with Paul Kiesgen and Stephen Robertson. You can watch the singers’ Voce Vista signals on three large screens throughout the sessions to see how the program confirms what the master teachers hear and how Voce Vista can help students to learn more quickly in the practice room and the studio.

x-ray of brainGuest clinicians Meribeth Bunch Dayme, Elizabeth Blades-Zeller and Lynn Helding will share their many revolutionary ideas on teaching and learning with us throughout the week. Subjects will include: improving the clarity and efficiency of the teacher’s communication with students, more efficient practice techniques, and approaches to producing consistent, solid performances without negative internal thoughts that interfere with successful singing.

We will review the basics of vocal technique with Paul Kiesgen and we will learn dozens of effective warm up exercises with IU voice professor, Costanza Cuccaro. Jeff Nelsen, hornist of the Canadian Brass and IU horn professor will show us his “Fearless Audition Techniques”. Participants will enjoy an opening night dinner, the Thursday evening participants’ recital, and the Saturday morning roundtable discussion with faculty. A number of college-level student participants will be chosen to perform on master classes and each will be able to attend all functions for a reduced fee. This workshop will help all of us to become more effective, more efficient and more confident as singers and teachers. We look forward to seeing you in June.
