Clarinet Requirements

(prescreen required for DM applicants only)

Undergraduate

Bachelor of Music (B.M.)
Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.)
Bachelor of Science in Music and an Outside Field (B.S.O.F.)

Graduate

Master of Music (M.M.)
Performer Diploma-Solo Performance (P.D.S.P.)

Doctor of Music. (D.M.)

Undergraduate Requirements

B.M. applicants should prepare:

  • All major and minor (harmonic, melodic) scales through 7 sharps and flats;
  • One slow etude;
  • One fast etude; and
  • Two contrasting solos from the standard repertoire.

B.M.E and B.S.O.F. applicants should prepare:

  • All major and minor (harmonic, melodic) scales through four sharps and flats;
  • One slow etude;
  • One fast etude; and
  • One solo from the standard repertoire.

Note: B.M.E. and B.S.O.F. students may audition on B-flat soprano or bass clarinet.

Graduate Requirements - M.M. or P.D.S.P.

 M.M. or P.D.S.P. applicants should prepare:

  • All major and minor (harmonic, melodic) scales through seven sharps and flats;
  • Three contrasting solos from the standard repertoire; and
  • Three contrasting orchestral excerpts.

Graduate Requirements - D.M.

DM Prescreen

DM applicants must submit a prescreen recording via the JSoM Supplemental Application by December 1, 2019.

Prescreen repertoire requirements are the same as the audition requirements. Please see below.

DM Audition

Auditions will take place during the February and March audition weekends on Saturday, February 7, 2020 and Saturday, March 6, 2020.

The audition is 20 minutes and no pianist is required.

Prescreen/ Audition Repertoire:

  • All major and minor (harmonic, melodic) scales through seven sharps and flats;
  • Three contrasting solos from the standard repertoire; and
  • Three contrasting orchestral excerpts.
