Undergraduate Requirements

Prescreen

All jazz percussion applicants must submit a prescreen video audition via the JSoM Supplemental Application by December 1, 2019.

All applicants should also upload a copy of their audition repertoire via the JSoM Supplemental Applicaiton.

Prescreen repertoire requirements are the same as the audition repertoire. Please see below for details.

Prescreen video recording requirements:

  • Video recording must be produced without artificial enhancement such as echo or electronic reverb, and should be performed in continuously (no editing within the work). However, it is acceptable to record each prepared piece separately.
  • If recording by smartphone, set camera to landscape mode
  • Video should include an introduction: state your name, degree objective, and whether you are a freshman or transfer applicant from another school.
  • At the end of the video, include a 2-3 minute clip commenting on why the JSoM Percussion Department interests you and what you hope to accomplish as a student here.

*Please Note: Percussion applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation via the JSoM Supplemental Application.

Audition

Auditions are by invitation only based on prescreen review. In addition to an audition, applicants should also be prepared for a 15 minute interview.

Undergraduate Prescreen and Audition Repertoire

Applicants should prepare:

  • Snare Drum: One solo or etude from Delecluse, Albright, Cirone, Peters, Goldenberg, or equivalent.
  • Drum Set: A prepared drum set piece: A big band chart, transcription or published solo. Demonstration of time and soloing in the following styles: medium swing, up-tempo swing, rock, bossa nova, and samba (play-along tracks are preferred).
  • Jazz Vibes: A jazz standard, transcription, or solo work (2 or 4 mallets)
  • World Percussion: Demonstrate basic skills and techniques on the world percussion instrument of your choice (conga drum, timbales, djembe, dumbek, etc.) with an emphasis on good time and feel.  Knowledge of the appropriate musical context is expected.   Suggested material: Afro-Cuban rhythms presented in "Introduction to the Conga Drum" DVD (Spiro/SherMusic - http://www.shermusic.com/new/242169.shtml), Part III.

  • An advanced level snare drum etude/solo of your choice.
  • An advanced-level jazz vibraphone solo (jazz standard, transcription, or solo work), 4 mallets preferred.
  • Drum Set*
    • A prepared piece: A big band chart (with play-along track), transcription or published solo. Demonstration of time and soloing in the following styles: medium swing, up-tempo swing, rock, bossa nova, and samba (play-along tracks are preferred).
  • World Percussion**
    • If the applicant has any experience with World Percussion (Afro-Cuban hand-drumming, Steel Pan, Brazilian, etc.) a short performance is encouraged.

 *For those graduate students seeking Associate Instructor assistantships, a drum set solo (and experience in drum set instruction) is mandatory.

**Those candidates seeking an Associate Instructor position in the area of World Percussion should include a performance on the World Percussion instrument of their choice.
