Jazz Saxophone Requirements

Undergraduate Requirements

Prescreen

All saxophone applicants must submit a video prescreen recording via the JSoM Supplemental Application by December 1, 2019.

Video prescreen recordings must be produced without artificial enhacement such as echo or electronic reverb.

Undergraduate Prescreen Repertoire Requirements:
  • Classical repertoire (prescreen only): Two contrasting etudes or movements from standard works (lyrical and technical). If invited to audition in person, you will not be asked to perform classical repertoire at the live audition.
  • Jazz repertoire: Play the melody and improvise on three tunes from memory: a blues, a tune selected from the list below, and one additional tune that is not a blues, "rhythm changes" tune, or ballad.

Audition

Auditions are by invitation only based on prescreen review.

Applicants may audition on soprano, alto, tenor or baritone saxophone.

Video Recorded Audition: If you are unable to come to campus for any of our audition weekends, you may upload a final audition video recording via the JSoM Supplemental Application. Submissions are due by March 7, 2020. Final video recordings must include a spoke introduction stating your name, degree interest, hometown, school, teachers, how many years you have played the saxophone, and other instruments you play. Please also upload a written resume indicating your musical, and academic accomplishments, your civic activities, private lesson teachers, etc.

Undergraduate Audition Repertoire Requirements
  • Jazz repertoire: Play the melody and improvise on three tunes from memory: a blues, a tune selected from the list below, and one additional tune that is not a blues, "rhythm changes" tune, or ballad. A rhythm section will be provided at the audition.

  • Scales full range: Major scales (and their modes), whole tone, diminished, and ascending melodic minor scales (and their modes).  For the prescreen recording, play four full-range scales of your choice. Play one scale entirely staccato and play the other sslurred.
  • Play the melody and improvise from memory on the chord changes of one tune from each of the following three lists. A rhythm section will be provided at the audition.
    • Bebop tunes: Groovin' High, Half Nelson, Confirmation, Donna Lee, Joy Spring, Stablemates.
    • Standard tunes: All The Things You Are, Stella By Starlight, What Is  This Thing Called Love?, Star Eyes, Alone Together, There Will Never Be Another You, Have You Met Miss Jones?, On Green Dolphin Street
    • Post-bop tunes: Giant Steps, Moment's Notice, Bolivia, Inner Urge, Dolphin Dance, Moontrane.
  • Auditionees may be asked to sight-read chord changes and typical jazz ensembles parts.
