Audition Information

Musicology Requirements

(prescreen and interview required)

Master of Arts in Musicology (M.A.)
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

Master of Arts in Musicology and Master of Library Science from the Department of Information and Library Science in the School of Informatics and Computing (M.A./ M.L.S.)

M.A. or Ph.D. Requirements

To apply for the M.A. or Ph.D. program, you need to submit two applications: one to the University Graduate School and one to the Jacobs School of Music.

In addition to the materials required on the music application, you should submit:

  • Formal research paper or thesis on an analytical or historical subject via JSoM Supplemental Application
  • GRE General test scores (must be sent to IU directly from test center)
  • Non-native speakers also must submit a TOEFL score of at least 84 for admission to the MA program and 100 for admission to the PhD program. (must be sent to IU directly from test center)
All materials must be submitted by the December 1, 2019.

After a review of your application materials, the department will determine whether you will be invited for an interview.

The Musicology Department offers direct entry to the Ph.D. program for highly qualified students who have completed B.A. or B.M. degrees.

M.A. and M.L.S. Requirements

Admission to the two programs is separate.

To apply to the dual-degree program, you need to submit three applications: two applications to the University Graduate School (one for the M.A. in Musicology and one for the M.L.S.): and one to the Jacobs School of Music (for the M.A. in Musicology).
